“Reverse every natural instinct and do the opposite of what you are inclined to do, and you will probably come very close to having a perfect golf swing.” Ben Hogan
Golf is illogical
Without embracing this, one will always fight sound swing mechanics!
The logical mind will always fight against making a sound effective golf swing - it is therefore crucial to learning the game that the 'illogical' be justified. For instance, most people slice the ball (bending the ball to the right as a right hander) - the clubhead naturally wants to go around in the followthrough (illogical!) which would make slicing the ball impossible - however the desire to 'steer' the ball straight leads to 'forcing' the clubhead square to the target on the followthrough (logical), effectively opening the face and leading to a sliced shot.
Golf is a game of process and repetition as the most desired outcome is the same, predictable outcome everytime - consistency!
We must however not complicate the game—this is where I come in!
Golf is about understanding ITS flaws, then yours and then finding a combination of ideally two, at the most three conscious movements that should be repeated time after time - consciously.
During my schools, we spend time discussing the games flaws, justifying why the illogical works and how and then understanding the flight of the golf ball and how the clubhead and swing impact on it.
There is a place for teaching method—I do a lot of it—but it should be born in mind that there are a million ways of swinging a golf club well, but the ball must be hit from a suitable angle, with the club on a suitable swing plane and with a suitable amount of speed—achieving these three things consistently is the goal, not a technically perfect swing which for most of us will always be illusive.
